U2 have hinted they will headline next year's Glastonbury festival.

The Irish rockers - who were forced to pull out of their first-ever appearance at the famous UK music event after frontman Bono injured his back - alerted fans on to the fact tickets were set to go on sale for the June 2011 three-day event.

A message posted on their website over the weekend said: "Will U2 fans finally see 'Glastonbury' at Glasto?"

The message referred to a song, called 'Glastonbury', which the band had prepared especially for the show.

The band added in their post to fans: "Looking at the tour dates - there is a gap in the band's schedule ahead of the East Lansing show on June 26th which would make the Friday night a possibility."

The band's manager Paul McGuiness refused to confirm their headlining slot, but gave a strong indication they are likely to play.

He said: "We're certainly excited about our plans for next year. Watch this space."

Tickets for next year's Glastonbury festival - which takes place in Worthy Farm, Somerset, South West England - sold out within four hours on Sunday (10/3/2010).

Glastonbury organizer Michael Eavis recently confirmed all three headliners for next year have been booked, but refused to say who they are.

He said: "The headliners next year are absolutely fantastic - I can guarantee that. It'll be on a par with this year, and possibly slightly better even."
