Joe Nichols

Born in Rogers, Arkansas in 1976, country musician Joe Edward Nichols’ career as a recording artist didn’t take off until later in life. He began playing guitar at an early age (his father had played bass in a number of country bands throughout Arkansas), and signed to a recording contract in 1996 with indie label Intersound, releasing his first self titled album that same year. Though it produced multiple moderately successful singles like "Six of One, Half a Dozen (Of the Other)" and "I Hate the Way I Love You", the album sold very poorly and as a result Nichols was dropped from the Intersound roster. He was signed signed to Warner Brothers Nashville for a time, but this deal also evaporated. Dejected, Nichols decided to abandon his dreams as a recording artist and instead took a job as a country music disc jockey.

Eight years later in 2002, Nichols signed to newly formed Universal South label - Universal Music Group’s upstart country music label. He released his second CD on Universal South, Man with a Memory, in 2003. His breakthrough album, it sold much better than his first, spawning four hit singles ("The Impossible", "Brokenheartsville", "She Only Smokes When She Drinks", "Cool to Be a Fool") and selling well over 100,000 copies. His distinct neoclassical style - a contemporary interpretation of traditional country music - and strong voice won him many fans in America’s heartland.

He released his third album, Revelation, less than a year later, and quickly followed it up with III, his third release on Universal South. Both records peaked within the top three spots of the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and were certified gold by the RIAA. Single "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off" from III climbed all the way to the #1 spot of the Billboard Hot Country Songs index; a well-deserved feat, considering the fact that Nichols had originally written the song over ten years earlier. During this time, Joe Nichols shared the stage with country greats like Alan Jackson and Toby Keith.
