Jenni Rivera

Mexican-American songstress Jenni Rivera is one of the most successful Spanish-language singers in North America, having released nine studio albums and sold over 20 million records internationally. Born in Long Beach, California (the same Los Angeles suburb that brought the world superstars like Sublime and Snoop Dogg), Jenni's natural talent for singing and dancing emerged at an early age, and landed her a record deal with EMI in the United States and Fonovosia Records in Mexico in 1993 at age 24; she was working as a real estate agent at the time. She released her first album Chacalosa two years later in 1995, to rave reviews.

Chacalosa took the Spanish-language music world by storm, climbing to the #1 spot on the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart and moving over a million copies in its first year on store shelves. The album was wildly popular, even inviting comparisons between Jenni Rivera and deceased Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez. Though Jenni's music certainly embraces elements of modern pop music, it is firmly grounded in the brass-heavy Northern Mexican Banda style, making it popular amongst both older and younger Hispanic generations, especially throughout Mexico and the American Southwest. Her next two albums, 1999's Si Quiernes Verme Llorar and Reina de Reinas proved to be just as successful as her debut, firmly establishing Jenni as one of the hottest commodities in the Latin music scene.

Jenni's success in the early years of her career led to a number of nicknames for the emerging artist, among them "Queen of Queens" and "the Banda Diva". Though her next three albums (2000's Que Me Entierren con la Banda, 2001's Se Las Voy a Dar a Otro and Dejate Amar) were less than successful and generally poorly received, Jenni returned to form with the release of her seventh album Simplemente... La Mejor, which garnered rave reviews and has sold over five million copies to date. Standout tracks from Simplemente... La Mejor include "A Cambio de Que" and "Si Me Recuerdas". Rivera's success continues to this day; her most recent album, 2008's Jenni, debuted at #31 on the mainstream Billboard 200 chart (no small feat for a niche artist) and has spawned a number of successful singles, among them "Culpable O Innocente". Currently, Jenni is working on a Spanish-language version of Britney Spears' hit "Womanizer", to be released exclusively on Itunes.
