George Strait is a living legend. One of the most prolific country artists in the history of the genre, he has sold over 65.5 million albums, just barely trailing The Rolling Stones and Elton John in record sales. In addition to the 38 albums he has released since 1981, Strait has released over 70 hit singles (55 of which have climbed to the #1 spot of the Billboard Hot Country Songs index) and starred in 4 movies. To call George Strait anything less than the “King of Country” is a profound understatement.

Strait was born in the small town of Poteet, Texas in 1952. When not working on his father’s cattle ranch, Strait began playing country music, influenced by the likes of George Jones and Hank Williams. After graduating from high school only to leave college soon after entering in early 1971, Strait joined the army and was stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. While in the army, Strait honed his skills while playing with Rambling Country, an army-sponsored country band. After leaving the Army in 1975, he returned to Southwest Texas State University to finish up his degree in agriculture.

While at Southwest Texas State University, Strait joined the Ace In the Hole Band, a country music band that needed a singer. The band toured extensively and became regionally famous during the 1970’s, playing in bars and honkey-tonks by night while George managed a cattle ranch by day. In 1980, he managed to land a recording contract with MCA Records. With the rest of the Ace In the Hole band remaining as his backing band, George Strait released his first album Strait Country in 1981, which went on to sell over a million copies - his first of 34 albums to be certified platinum by the RIAA.
