Bucky Covington

William Joel Covington was born in Rockingham, North Carolina in 1997. Interestingly, he has an identical twin brother, Rocky, who is also a singer. William prefers to sing under the stage name Bucky, a nickname given to him by his grandfather Buck. Bucky learned to play guitar at age 18, eventually learning to play drums and bass as well. After graduating high school in 1996, Bucky honed his musical skills at bars and clubs across North Carolina while working a day job as a mechanic.

Bucky rose to prominence in 2005 when he appeared on the popular Fox musical talent competition show American Idol. American Idol has jumpstarted the careers of a number of a number of country artists, including Carrie Underwood and Carmen Rasmusen. Though he only made it to eighth place on the show - losing the title to soulful crooner Taylor Hicks - Bucky’s energetic performances of songs by Queen, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Tim McGraw caught the attention of country music label Lyric Street Records, who signed him to a recording contract in late 2006.

Lyric Street Records - home to successful country acts Rascal Flatts and SHeDAISY, among others - is owned by the Walt Disney Company, who successfully used their position as a media powerhouse to promote Bucky’s first single "A Different World". "A Different World" went on to chart on the Billboard country and pop charts as well as the mainstream Hot 100 chart, establishing Bucky as a country artist with crossover appeal.
