Have you ever been to Escatawpa? It’s okay, most people haven’t. A small town in Southeastern Mississippi, Escatawpa is home to 2000 residents, a handful of traffic lights, and one superstar rock band - 3 Doors Down. One of the biggest and most successful mainstream rock bands of the new millennium, 3 Doors Down combines a clean post-grunge sound with elements of alternative and southern rock, roughly comparable to contemporaries like Nickelback, Staind, and Shinedown.

The band originally formed in 1996, when drummer/singer Brad Arnold began jamming with two other Escatawpa residents, bassist Todd Harrell and guitarist Matt Roberts. The trio began playing shows around their hometown, eventually extending their touring range to outside of Mississippi. They went through a succession of names over the next few months, with Brad, Todd, and Matt eventually deciding to firmly name the band 3 Doors Down in 1997, after part of a broken neon sign they had seen while playing a gig in Alabama. They brought in a second guitarist (Chris Henderson) into the band in 1997, independently recording a self-titled demo later that year.

3 Doors Down eventually caught the attention of A&R reps at Universal Records, who signed the band in 2000. They released their first album The Better Life later that year, which went on to move over 3 million copies based on the success of singles like "Kryptonite" and "Loser". "Kryptonite" - a Superman themed song based on their rural hometown - remained at #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks index for 11 weeks in a row, a record for the band. Their second effort, 2002’s Away From the Sun, fared similarly well, rising to the #8 spot on the Billboard 200 and earning quadruple-Platinum certification from the RIAA. Notable tracks from Away From the Sun include "When I’m Gone" and "The Road I’m On".
